Sanskrit Teacher Training

ASI's Apprenticeship / Teacher Training

In order to nurture and sustain the original vision of ASI and to create ongoing opportunities for new students to study Sanskrit, a long-term Apprenticeship/Teacher Training program has been established. The Apprenticeship is designed to foster proficiency in teaching Sanskrit using the ASI Learning Model - the cornerstone of all ASI courses.

Requirements for Apprentice/Teacher development includes:

1) Ongoing participation in ASI courses

2) Self-study firmly rooted in the participant's understanding of his/her own internal process when applying the learning model

3) Practice and mastery in delivering ASI course material using the learning model

The training will serve to develop a group of apprentices dedicated to their own ongoing study of the Sanskrit Language. Because the teaching of any subject flows from an individual teacher’s own course of study, ongoing study of the Sanskrit Language, Sanskrit texts and practices based in Yoga philosophy will be a central focus of the training. Our vision is to create a growing community of students and teachers dedicated to the study of the Sanskrit Language and Sanskrit texts utilizing the practice of yoga embodied in the ASI Learning Model.

The first year of the Apprenticeship will be offered in 3 modules in a week long immersion format. Sanskrit Level 1 (weekend) is the minimum prerequisite for beginning this course of study.

Immersion I focuses on the delivery of the Learning Model;  set up schedules for practice teaching and the learning and practice of calligraphy through an instructional DVD of Vyaas Houston teaching calligraphy strokes and the drawing of Devanagari characters.

In the Immersion II, participants learn to teach the mouth positions and delivery of the alphabet along with vowel/consonant combinations. Everyone learns to teach Sanskrit Level 1 or Introduction to Sanskrit utilizing the structure developed by Vyaas Houston.

The final Immersion is a week long Sanskrit grammar and Sanyama practice intensive.

Minimum Prerequisite: ASI Sanskrit Level I
